Heritage Museum of Montgomery County

The Heritage Museum of Montgomery County Texas is an excellent place for anyone interested in the county’s history. It is intended to evoke pleasant memories, and to inspire the next generation in appreciation of the region’s heritage. It is a fitting tribute to the pioneers who settled this area and built churches and schools, businesses, as well as industries. The structure was built from a hand-hewn log cottage, which was moved several more times before being donated by Conroe to the city in 1972. Conroe’s historic buildings are no longer part of the local landscape

Conroe was once home to many historic buildings. Conroe Mill School and Conroe Normal and Industrial College both were built in the latter half of 1800. Both schools were open to the African American community. The historic Grogan–Cochran house is home to the Montgomery County Heritage Museum. The museum displays artifacts as well as old photographs from the area. Other attractions include the Strake-Gray Oilfield House, and the Roughneck Bunkhouse.

Conroe’s train depot burned in 1981

It was once the main hub of the Montgomery County rail system, welcoming rail travelers from all over. It served as the county’s seat, hosting businesses, hotels and boarding houses. It was rebuilt as a museum, where visitors can view historical items and learn more about Montgomery County’s rich history.

Grogan/Cochran Home

The Heritage Museum of Montgomery County in Conroe is located in the historic Grogan/Cochran home that was built in 1924. It contains memorabilia and photos that tell the history of the Cochran and Grogan families. The museum is open every day from 9 am until 4 pm, except Wednesdays and Saturdays. Admission costs $2 per adult.
