Heritage Museum of Montgomery County

The Heritage Museum of Montgomery County Texas is an excellent place for anyone interested in the county’s history. The building was created to evoke pleasant childhood memories and to inspire future generations to appreciate the area’s heritage. It is a fitting memorial for the pioneers who settled the region and built churches schools, businesses, and other industries. The building was built on a hand-hewn log house, which was moved numerous times before it was donated in 1972 to Conroe. Conroe’s historic structures are no longer part the local landscape

Historic buildings once graced the landscape in Conroe. Conroe Mill School and Conroe Normal and Industrial College, both built in late 1800s. Both schools served the African American community in the region. The Heritage Museum of Montgomery County is located in the historic Grogan-Cochran house. The museum features artifacts and old photographs of the area. Other sites in the city include the Strake-Gray Oilfield House and the Roughneck Bunkhouse.

Conroe’s train depot burned in 1981

It was once the central hub of the Montgomery County rail network, welcoming travelers from all walks of the rail system. It served as the county’s seat, hosting businesses, hotels and boarding houses. After the fire, it became a museum where people can view historic items and learn about Montgomery County’s history.
