Heritage Museum of Montgomery County

The Heritage Museum of Montgomery County Texas is an excellent place for anyone interested in the county’s history. It is intended to evoke pleasant memories, and to inspire the next generation in appreciation of the region’s heritage. It is a fitting memorial for the pioneers who settled the region and built churches schools, businesses, and other industries. The building was built on a hand-hewn log house, which was moved numerous times before it was donated in 1972 to Conroe. Conroe’s historic buildings are no longer part of the local landscape

Historic buildings once graced the landscape in Conroe. Conroe Mill School and Conroe Normal and Industrial College, both built in late 1800s. Both schools were open to the African American community. The Heritage Museum of Montgomery County is located in the historic Grogan-Cochran house. The museum displays artifacts as well as old photographs from the area. Other attractions include the Strake-Gray Oilfield House, and the Roughneck Bunkhouse.

Conroe’s train depot burned in 1981

It was once the hub for the Montgomery County rail system and welcomed rail travelers from all parts of the country. It was the county seat and hosted hotels, boardinghouses, and other facilities. It was transformed into a museum in which visitors can view historic items as well as learn about Montgomery County’s historical past.
